Q: My old registration code no longer works with version 3 of Tweaki. Do I need a new one?

A: Version 3 of Tweaki does use a new licensing method. Versions prior to the 3.0 version will need to acquire a new unlock code for this latest version of Tweaki.

S: All registered users of Tweaki can obtain a new unlock code for Tweaki, free of charge. Simply visit the Tweaki update page for instructions on receiving your new unlock code:

Q: I am a registered user of a version of Tweaki earlier than version 4.0. Can I upgrade for free?

A: All registered users, whether you purchased Tweaki through JerMar Software or through another vendor, always receive upgrades for free.

S: If you purchased Tweaki...for Power Users through 3B Software/Digital River/TUCOWS or in combination with the SANDRA bundle, please download the vendor specific software using this link: Tweaki/3B Software

If you purchased Tweaki...for Power Users directly through JerMar Software, please download Tweaki using this link: Tweaki/JerMar Software
Once you have downloaded the new version from the appropriate link above, uninstall your previous version. Once uninstalled, run the installation for the new version just downloaded. The new version will require a new unlock code to fully register the product. See the first question in the FAQ for information on obtaining that unlock code.

Q: I have submitted my request for a new unlock code but I get no response. Why?

A: The most likely cause for this is a return email address that is invalid. Since the system is automated it extracts the return address of the email used to request the new unlock code. The new unlock code is then sent to this return email address. If the email client used to send the email address is improperly configured then the email gets bounced back. Surprisingly, this happens with great frequency.

S: If you submitted a request for a new unlock code and have not received it then you should contact us at support@jermar.com with a working email address so that we may send you the new unlock code.

Q: Whenever I uninstall and reinstall Tweaki, my serial number changes and I need to retrieve a new unlock code. Why?

A: The serial number for Tweaki gets generated when you first install the software. The serial number is unique to that installation of Tweaki. Uninstalling Tweaki will not cause the serial number to change, however, deleting the Tweaki installation folder that remains after uninstalling Tweaki will cause the serial number to change when reinstalling Tweaki. This is because the "JerMar Software Tweaki...for Power Users.SLX" file located within that folder gets deleted when the remaining installation folder gets removed.

S: To prevent registration issues with Tweaki backup the file "JerMar Software Tweaki...for Power Users.SLX" located in the folder where you installed Tweaki. Should you need to install and uninstall Tweaki after it has been registered, copying this file back into Tweaki's installation folder will prevent the need to re-enter registration information. Just make certain you copy the file back into the Tweaki install folder BEFORE running Tweaki for the first time. Should you ever need a new unlock code you can find information on how to get one at the Tweaki update page. However, if you make a copy of the *.SLX file and insure it remains in the Tweaki install folder you should never need an unlock code again.

Q: When applying changes to remotely connected computers, when I change views, it appears as though some options did not get applied. Why is this?

A: This occurs due to a) when the computers you are remotely connected to are running different operating systems than the computer that had the current view at the time you applied the remote changes. b) Or, the current view already had those options enabled and set.

S: a) This is simply a result of the current view or OS not supporting the same feature set as the other remotely connected OSs. The easiest way to prevent this situation is to always connect to same OSs when applying changes. b) Disable any options on the current view and then reapply them in order to have them propagate to the remotely connected computers.

Q: When remotely connected to two or more computers, when I select the restore defaults button, the change occurs for only one of the remotely connected computers. Why?

A: Unlike most other options in Tweaki, the Restore Defaults option is applicable only to the current view –irregardless of whether Tweaki has multiple connections at the time the option is selected.

S: This option is valid on a computer-by-computer basis. When using this option you must have the computer you wish to restore defaults onto as the current view. Keep in mind; the Restore Defaults option does not restore your selections to their previous values. This option instead restores all values to default values. Use the Undo function to restore values back to their original values.

Q: On the NT / Windows 2000 / XP Performance tab, the item “Change default printer spool directory” is disabled. Why?

A: A printer must be installed before this option becomes enabled.

S: This is by design.

Q: On the NT / Windows 2000 / XP Performance tab, the item “Check size of L2 cache that NT ‘sees’” is disabled. Why?

A: This option is only useful for computers with direct-mapped L2 caches. Pentium II and later processors do not have direct- mapped L2 caches.

S: This is by design.

Q: Several items in the interface are disabled. Why?

A: Depending on your configuration, some options may be disabled. Tweaki verifies that each option is valid for your configuration and, if not valid, disables it.

S: This is by design.

Q: When I loaded Tweaki it indicated that HTML Help is not supported on my operating system.

A: When Tweaki loads up it verifies that your system is capable of displaying HTML style help. If not, Tweaki will prompt you with that information.

In order to display HTML Style help you must meet the following criteria:
1) Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher installed
2) hh.exe installed into your \Windows or \Windows\System folder
3) hhctrl.ocx installed into your \Windows or \Windows\System folder

If these files are not present or are not of the correct version, Tweaki prompts you with a warning.

S: You can download a 477K file, hhupd.exe, from your web site. This file will install the necessary components for displaying HTML style help. You can download this file from here.

Q: When I loaded Tweaki I got a message indicating that large fonts are not supported. What should I do?

A: Tweaki does not support large fonts. If your system is running large fonts, or fonts above 100%, Tweaki's UI may become illegible.

S: To correct this situation you will need to return your font size setting to the default of "Small Fonts". To do so, load the Display applet of Control Panel. Select the Settings tab. Select the Advanced button. From the resulting window select the General tab. Select the "Small fonts" selection of the Fonts option.

Q: When saving my Internet Explorer Favorites Tweaki stops abruptly and indicates the saving of the Favorites failed. Why?

A: This is caused by a corrupt Favorite file.

S: You must determine which Favorite file is causing Tweaki to fail. Start by removing one sub folder from the Favorites folder at a time. Once removed, try running Tweaki again until the saving of the Favorites folder is successful. If the save is successful you know the last folder removed contains the corrupt Favorite file. Now add this folder back to the Favorites folder. Begin removing Favorites from this folder and attempting to run the save again. Repeat the removal, save process until you identify the corrupt Favorite file. Once identified remove it from your Favorites list.

Q: I'd like to set security for All Users on my Windows NT/2000/XP system but can't figure out how?

S: Create the account you wish restricted. Then temporarily give this account administrator privileges and log onto it. Load Tweaki and set any security restrictions you wish enforced. Now remove the temporary administrator privileges and log off the account. The desired account is now operating with the restrictions in place.

If the target computer resides on a network a quicker method exists to set your security restrictions. Simply install Tweaki onto the administrator's computer. Using Tweaki's built in network functionality you can browse for the target computer over the network. Once connected, you can set security restrictions --or any other tweaks-- as though you were working with the local computer.

Q: How do I prevent users from downloading files from the Internet?

A: An easy solution exists, provided that the system uses Internet Explorer as its only browser. You can prevent other browsers from being installed or running on the system by implementing the feature within Tweaki entitled, "Run only allowed Windows applications".

S: Open Internet Explorer and select Tools | Internet Options. Then select the Security tab. Highlight the Internet icon. Then select the Custom Level button. Scroll down until you find the option for Downloads. Select the choice labeled "Disable". Close all the dialogs and exit Explorer. Now load Tweaki. Select the Security | Internet Explorer tab. Under "Internet Explorer Security Zones" place a check in the box next to "Internet". Close Tweaki --your all done! The ability to download via Internet Explorer (HTTP) is now disabled.

Q: When I run the installation file for Tweaki the Windows Installer for MS Office loads. Why?

A: Registry entries for the Windows Installer have become corrupt.

S: The solution is to remove ISScript.msi via the Add and Remove applet of Control Panel. Finally, search the registry for any keys containing ISScript and delete them. Now rerun the Tweaki installer.

Q: I have a suggestion for a feature addition. Where can I send it so I know it will be reviewed?

A: We would love to hear your suggestions on feature additions. Please send all suggestions to: ideas@jermar.com

Q: After upgrading to version 4.x I no longer have any Office 97 tweaks. Why?

A: Version 4 and higher of Tweaki supports Microsoft Office 2000 and Microsoft Office XP only.

S: To solve this issue you must revert back to a previous version of Tweaki.

Q: When I set options in Tweaki they don't "stick" under Windows XP. Why?

A: The ability to apply Tweaki options in Windows XP can be impacted when using the "Fast User Switching" feature. For example, when you switch to a user other than the user that originally logged onto the computer and then attempt to apply Tweaki settings the application fails.

S: To apply settings to a specific account on Windows XP you should log in as the account. Do not use the "Fast User Switching" feature when using Tweaki.

Q: When I attempt to upgrade Tweaki using the internal update feature I get a message concerning "para.dat" and the upgrade fails. What do I do?

A: This is due to the read-only attribute being set on the para.dat file. When the installer encounters a file with this attribute it fails.

S: Run the internal update feature of Tweaki. When you receive the installation instructions concerning undodesc.dat stop. Do not close the message. Instead, leave the message on screen and open Windows Explorer. Insure that you have the ability to see hidden and system files turned on within Windows Explorer. Locate the folder where you have Tweaki installed. Remove the system and read only file attributes of all files contained within the folder. When complete close Windows Explorer. Now complete the internal updating.

Q: Whenever I attempt to change visual style elements on Windows XP they never "stick"., Why?

A: The Themes service has been disabled.

S: Re-enable your Themes service. To do so, open Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Computer Management | Services and Applications | Services. Select Themes from the list on the right and then select Restart.

Q: Is there a way to print or search through the Tweaki help file?

A: You can download a Word document containing the complete Tweaki help file. This document is print ready and easily searchable.

S: Download the Word version of Tweaki's help file here.
